I had a lot of trouble using a Windows 2008 Server with a fax/modem as my fax server. This was using the built-in fax server in the operating system. It was frequently unreliable, and as a result, wasted lots of time chasing weird issues. We started using a fax to e-mail service, but their software for printing from Windows applications didn't work too well.
This Multi-Tech product is definitely not cheap, at least compared with a USB or serial fax/modem. However, I was looking for a hardware device that would just work, and allow multiple to send and receive faxes. This product is pretty close to being what I was looking for, but it is a little rough around the edges.
Our setup was to receive faxes onto a network drive, but still be able to fax out using a fax machine. It took a little tinkering, but I was able to get the device to receive faxes on two lines, but send using only one.
