The B740 has a 200 x 200 dpi maximum resolution and supports paper sizes ranging from letter to A4. The copier function has a higher 360 x 360 dpi maximum resolution and is able to print up to 99 black-and-white copies as quickly as three pages per minute. Sending a single fax to multiple destinations is easy with sequential broadcasting of up to 113 numbers built-in.
Up to 100 pages of standard paper will fit into the paper tray, while an automatic document feeder will fax documents up to 20 pages long, at the touch of a single button. You can store 112 of your most frequently used numbers in speed dial for quick retrieval, while the built-in memory will store 42 pages of incoming faxes should you run out of paper on a busy day. I am very happy with Canon cameras, so I reasoned that I would also like their electronic equipment. I could have been very wrong with this assumption, but we are very pleased with what we purchased. The installation and setup were very simple and easy to follow. The manual is clear, concise and helpful. The copy quality of incoming faxes is very good. Also, the size is perfect since our home office has limited space available to us. The only small drawback is that there is noplace to put information in regard to speed dial numbers. We solved this by typing up our own "cheat sheet" and taping it to the machine. I decided to pay the extra money to get an inkjet instead of the cheaper thermal printers, mainly because I read that thermal cartridges don't last long and replacements are expensive (i.e. you get the machine cheaper up front, but over the long term it costs more). Since the B740 uses the same ink wells as some of Canon's bubble printers, I also figured it'd be easier to get replacement ink wells a few years down the road. The machine does what it's supposed to do and I've been happy with it so far. Setup was a slight pain, although a call to Canon support took care of that. Overall the manual is good.
