Summary: This is my second unit and I love it 2010-07-26
Comment: I had L170 before and used it for 3 year with tons of paper. I love it.

Summary: Pretty Solid machine overall - Good for the price 2010-06-23
Comment: I have used this fax machine at our small office for 5 years now (2005-2010) and I have swapped it out a few times and replaced it with this same model because we are all used to using this machine. Overall it is pretty good for the price of $160-$200 each. We have found it lasts about 2 years until the machine starts to make some noises and has to be repaired. We found the repairs to be more expensive than the machine itself since the machine can be found on amazon for $159 as I type this now. So there's no point in calling out a repairman to fix the fax rather than just simply buying a new fresh machine.

Overall the print quality and build is quite good, but the feeder will slowly jam up or make noises after heavy use after a couple years, which is very normal and reasonable I think. After using it for 5+ years I would recommend this machine if you can buy for less than $200. You can also network it on your local LAN in your office to be a network printer too.

Summary: Takes up little desk space but lacks a network interface 2010-05-13
Comment: I took off one star for a couple reasons really. First I object to shipping a product with "crippled" toner / ink or consumables. These things are expensive and end up in the landfill making more waste. Many companies have adopted the policy of cheapest selling price, expensive supplies, and a "starter" cartridge which will get another $100 out of you within weeks of use.

Secondly, the unit lacks a network interface. Today, all office printers should be on the network to be shared amongst employees. Here both the printer and fax could be shared! I end up putting "networkless" devices on HP's network adapters that allow them to become a networked device.

Other than that, its your typical fax printer. I do like the small footprint on the desk. Every resource is scarce in some way - a network fax would be nice to have. Deskspace is scarce too. Fortunately the printer does not have substantial power surges like some older equipment.

I like it overall after putting it on the network.

Summary: Great customer service from Canon direct 2010-04-12
Comment: I purchased this fax printer in january of 2010.

In march, it stopped receiving incoming faxes. I plugged a different fax machine in, and it would receive faxes.

Called Canon direct, they stayed on the phone with us for about an hour trying different methods and settings. None of them worked.

Received a new fax sent by next day air and they paid postage to return the old one.

Summary: Great for the office 2009-10-11
Comment: This is our third L170. The first is three years old and still going strong. We send or receive more than a dozen faxes per day and the only thing it has needed was replacement toner cartridges. When another department needed a fax machine, there was no doubt what model to get. We are now on our third and we are happy with all three of them. If we need another fax machine, we'll buy another L170. It is a workhorse.
