Says "ink is out" when it really isn't.,

I have been very happy with my Dell 948. I am a computer bimbo, so I haven't figured out how to use the remote capability. (I'm sure it is exceedingly simple.) But I have had good luck with copying, scanning and printing. I HAVE had the experience of running out of ink in a very short time. Turns out the sensor for empty ink cartridges is poor. After having replaced the cartridges after just a minimum of use, I thought of getting another printer because of the cost of Dell's proprietary ink cartridges. However, I read somewhere about poor ink sensors and decided to just keep printing until the page no longer prints properly. Well, it has been at least 6 months more of use without any sign of loss of ink. Good thing I didn't mail back the old cartridges. I will just reinstall them when these truly run out. They must have oodles left in them. Now the only problem with the poor ink sensor is that every time I print, I have to go through the extra step of telling it "yes, DO print...Read more

Attributes don't count for much if the ink runs out in 2 copies,

The Dell 948 seems on the surface to be a pretty good value for the money. It's a great price, and the quality of its printing is very high. But since I've had mine, I've had to replace the ink cartridges twice, and it's now calling for yet another set -- both black and color -- even though I've only printed maybe 5 pages at the most. No exaggeration -- FIVE pages. The first time, right after I got it, I printed all of two pages before it told me I was nearly out of ink.
So I ordered a set of cartridges from Dell, thinking maybe the ones that were shipped with the printer were some kind of trial thing with hardly any ink or something. When the package arrived, the black cartridge was leaking all over the inside of the box. I called Dell, and after being on with tech support for 45 minutes, I finally got them to send me a replacement for free...after they tried to weasel me into paying for it! And Dell cartridges are expensive! And then five pages later..."almost out of...Read more

Where'd the ink go?,

I really like my Dell 948 but I've begun to notice an odd thing. I very rarely print in colour but my 948 tells me that my expensive colour cartridge is just as empty as my slightly less expensive black cartridge. How can that be I ask myself? Where is all the color ink going if I'm only printing in B&W? I've just had to replace them both to enable my continued use of the 948 printer but the weight of the 'empty' colour cartridge appears to me to weigh exactly the same as the full replacement. Both cartridges seem to empty very quickly too. Be warned if you're considering purchasing the 948 from Dell.
