I bought this thing last November. It's a printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine all in one. I've always used a Canon CanoScan N670U scanner with good results, but three months ago I bought a laptop to replace my desktop computer. Last night, for the first time in months, I needed to scan something and discovered that my Canon scanner apparently isn't compatible with Windows 7, which is on my laptop. I ended up using this Brother scanner for the first time. It's a pretty good scanner, somewhat user friendly, though it took a while to learn how to use it because this Brother unit doesn't come with a good hard copy of instructions. Instead, you pretty much have to learn how to use this unit on your own through trial and error. That's the case nowadays with so many electronic devices - they either don't come with any instructions at all, or you have to print them off their website and use tons of paper and ink. This printer does everything it does quite well. I'm a college student and I'm always printing off a last minute paper and this printer has never let me down. It faxes, scans, copies, and prints well. It's not the fastest printer, but it's not supposed to compete with Laserjets. It would be equally fitting for a personal office. The mention of another review on this website says that it's annoying to not have a sleep mode for when you're on the phone, and that's a valid complaint. But normally, I know I'm going to be receiving a fax before I receive it and the majority of my fax transmittals are outgoing. So for me, that's no problem as I just leave it unplugged from the line most of the time. Additionally, it doesn't hold oodles and noodles of paper at a time: a little less than a full romance novel's height of a stack. (So I hear. I'd never read one of those. I bought this on sale for under $100 as a replacement for the Kodak ESP9 which was full of problems. This one is problem free but it could use improvements.

The print quality is poor for one. It does not make copies very well. It also offers a standby power saving mode that looks like it's off but when the phone rings you'll realize that it's not. It would be nice to turn off while talking on the phone but that is not possible.

Cheap printer and cheap ink for a cheap price so you get what you pay for.
