Combining a plain paper fax machine with a copier, 2.4 GHz cordless phone, and all-digital answering system, the remanufactured Panasonic KX-FPG379 is a true home office command center. The fax machine, which is outfitted with a 14.4 kbps modem, offers a transmission speed of nine seconds per page, along with a 28-page memory should you accidentally run out of paper while an important fax is coming through. The fax function also broadcasts to as many as 20 locations, while the automatic document feeder offers a capacity of 10 pages. The unit excels as a copier as well, with the ability to make as many of 30 copies of a single document, and to collate larger multi-page copies. Plus, the copier both reduces (92, 86, and 72 percent of the original size) and enlarges (150 and 200 percent) copy, so you don't need to electronically manipulate a document to enjoy smaller or larger print.
The built-in cordless phone, meanwhile, transmits on the 2.4 GHz digital frequency, which eliminates the hiss and fuzziness suffered by most analog signals. Thanks to the phone's call waiting/caller ID compatibility--which requires a subscription to a fee-based phone company service--and caller ID memory, you'll know the name and number of the last 50 callers, even if you're currently talking to someone else. The handset's three-line, multifunction LCD, meanwhile, lets you see all caller ID information without scrolling, while the backlighting aids visibility in low-light situations. Another nice bonus is the phone directory, which stores an additional 50 names and numbers of your favorite friends, family members, and pizza joints.
The phone system is also equipped with an all-digital answering system for quick, easy retrieval of crystal-clear messages. Message operation has never been easier, with up to 18 minutes of recording time, in addition to such features as two mailboxes, remote operation, message transfer, a voice time/day stamp, and skip-and-repeat. And don't worry about losing your messages when the power goes out, as they're stored in flash memory for later retrieval. Users will also appreciate the voice/fax pager alert, which sends a numeric message to your pager each time you receive a fax or voice message.
Additional features include an antenna that lights up when a call is coming through, a digital duplex speakerphone that works through both the base and the handset, a 30-sheet paper tray, a page locator that helps you track down the misplaced handset, and a headset jack that enables hands-free communication (headset sold separately). The KX-FPG379 measures 18.2 by 9.6 by 13.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.
